Early Life

David Eric Grohl was born in Warren, Ohio on January 14, 1969.

Dave’s parents, Virginia Jean (a teacher) and James Harper Grohl (a news writer), had no idea they’d given birth to such a gifted child. His father was a highly successful, award-winning journalist whose colleagues described him as “a talented political observer who possessed the ability to call every major election with uncanny accuracy”. Dave’s parents divorced when he was seven years old. His mother got custody and raised him on her own, as was customary at the time. Dave became interested in music at the age of 12 and began learning to play the guitar.

Structured lessons, however, were not suitable for his temperament, so he decided to teach himself. As a result, he joined a number of bands with his friends. Dave and his sister spent the summer of 13 at their cousin Tracey’s house. Their cousin then introduced them to punk rock by taking them to shows by popular local punk bands. Dave saw his first “Naked Raygun” concert at “The Cubby Bear” in 1982. Dave attended Thomas Jefferson High School in Virginia, where his freshman class elected him vice president. As class vice president, Dave would play bits of songs by major punk bands over the intercom before making his morning announcements.

His mother decided to transfer Dave to Bishop Ireton High School in Alexandra due to his cannabis use. Dave transferred to Annandale High School after two years. Dave Grohl played in several local bands during his high school years. He was a guitarist in the band “Freak Baby,” but was soon moved to the drums after the band fired their bass guitarist and reshuffled their lineup. The band renamed itself “Mission Impossible” after the lineup change. Neil Peart, the drummer for Rush, had a big influence on Dave, and he found himself not going to lessons but simply listening to Rush and teaching himself how to play the drums. Dave joined a hardcore punk band called “Dain Bamage” after “Mission Impossible” broke up. Dave abruptly left “Dain Bamage” and joined a band called “Scream” in March 1987.

Career

Dave’s entrance into the band “Scream” was not entirely honest, as he lied about his age to get in. He left high school during his junior year to join the band. Dave toured with Scream for the next four years, recording a couple of live albums as well as two studio albums.

Dave became a big fan of the “Melvins” while playing in Scream and eventually befriended them. Through befriending “Melvins”, Dave got to meet Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic from the band “Nirvana”. When “Scream” broke up, Dave called Melvins’ guitarist for advice on where to go next. Nirvana was looking for a drummer, so the guitarist gave him the band’s phone numbers. He quickly passed the audition and was accepted into the band. Dave joined Nirvana just before the release of their debut album, “Bleach,” in the middle of recording several demos.

Grohl spent the next few months touring to various labels after the band’s demo performance sparked a lot of interest. Nirvana eventually signed with DGC Records. The band released “Nevermind” in 1991, which became a worldwide commercial success. During this time, Grohl completed his own recordings and released “Pocketwatch” on cassette in 1992. He called the cassette “Late!” and released it.While working on his own material, Dave became a major contributor to Nirvana’s songwriting. Cobain overheard Grohl working on “Color Pictures of a Marigold” and decided to join in.

Soon after, the two began collaborating on the song. They released “Color Pictures of a Marigold” as a B-side version on the “Heart Shaped Box” single and simply named “Marigold”. His musical talent blossomed when he began writing and recording music during his breaks from working with Nirvana. Following the tragic death of lead singer Kurt Cobain, Dave sought a new outlet and decided to produce his own music. The “Foo Fighters” were born as a result of this. Unfortunately, due to Cobain’s tragic death in April 1994, Nirvana quickly came to an end. He quickly recorded a fifteen-track demo on his own and played all of the instruments. When he didn’t get much interest, Dave wondered if he’d always be drumming for other bands. After declining an invitation to join “Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers,” Dave joined “Pearl Jam” for two or three shows.

After a while, the record labels began to show interest in the demo he’d recorded. This prompted Dave to begin recruiting band members, resulting in the formation of the legendary Foo Fighters. Grohl reached the top of the Billboard Modern Rock chart after four successful albums. On November 3, 2009, the Foo Fighters released their first “Greatest Hits” collection after six albums. The Foo Fighters released their eighth studio album on November 10th, 2014, and it went to number two in the United States. The band has released ten albums to date, with their tenth reaching number three on the Billboard 200 in 2021.

Grohl and Jordyn Blum eventually had three daughters: Ophelia Saint, Harper Willow, and Violet Maye. They currently reside in Encino but are advocates for the San Fernando Valley area.
