After 16 months and earning his Equity card, Serkis joined several touring companies, including productions of: Bouncers opposite Hull Truck; Florizel and The Winter’s Tale; and King Lear’s Fool with director Max Stafford-Clark. In the early 1990s he moved to London and acted in Dogboy, the Royal Court Theater production of Mojo, and Wilson Milam’s production of Hurlyburly (1997) at the Queen’s Theatre, Shaftesbury Avenue, with Rupert Graves and David Tenant.
