Previously, he was on the music faculty at Bates College, the University of Maine at Augusta, and Concordia University of Wisconsin. Dr. Carr has worked with orchestras in North America, Europe and Asia. He has worked with the Alabama, Baltimore, Dubuque, Hartford and Portland Symphony Orchestras, the Juilliard Orchestra, the Union Orchestra at Carnegie Hall and the AIMS Festival Orchestra in Graz, Austria. As a musician, Dr. Carr has performed and recorded with the American Brass Quintet, Isthmus Brass Ensemble and King’s Brass. It can be heard on many records under the names of Albany, Naxos, Summit and Peer 2.

Career

Alan Carr made his radio debut on Christmas Day 2007 for BBC Radio 2 as part of their program on Alan Carr’s Christmas Box show. He filled in on BBC Radio 6 Music on 16 February and 14 June 2008 for Adam and Joe and appeared on the Brand Russell Show on 4 October 2008. He also presented Alan Carr’s Comedy Outings for BBC Radio 2 in 2008.

On 25 April 2009, Carr began hosting Going Out with Alan Carr, a new show for BBC Radio 2, in conjunction with Emma Forbes (later replaced by Melanie Sykes). The show was broadcast every Saturday evening from 6 pm to 8 pm. On 8 March 2012, he announced that he made the decision to leave to focus on his Chatty Man show. His last show was on 31 March 2012. Carr was replaced by Liza Tarbuck. He returned on Boxing Day 2015 for a one-off show on the station.

For four weeks in January/February 2017 Carr returned to BBC Radio 2 again to replace Paul O’Grady on his Sunday show. Carr teamed up with Sykes to present a 10-week program called ‘Summer Escapes’ for Graham Norton on Saturdays from July to September on BBC Radio 2 every year from 2017 until its final broadcast in 2020 following Norton’s departure from the station water. It includes summer-based initiatives, including ‘Britain’s Sea Survey’.

Carr regularly performs in stand-up, on tour and on television. It was featured in three shows in Edinburgh and in 2007 it toured the UK followed by a DVD called Tooth Fairy Live. Carr has his own monthly show at a comedy club in Manchester, and he travels around the city, supporting other acts. He performed at the Apollo Theater in London, was televised for the BBC One series Live at the Apollo, and featured in the Royal Variety Performance.

When accepting his award for Best Entertainer at the British Comedy Awards in December 2008, Carr dedicated it to Karen Matthews, who was convicted earlier that month of kidnapping Shannon Matthews, his daughter.
