Career

As a teenager in Sydney, O’Loughlin began working in short films and fringe theatre. His first acting job was as an extra in a commercial, where he played a Marine.  He began his career in Australian television and film productions after graduating from NIDA (National Institute of Dramatic Arts). His television credits include BlackJack: Sweet Science, Love Bytes, and White Collar Blue.

He landed his first film role as the lead in Oyster Farmer in 2004. He went on to appear in Man-Thing, Feed, and the Australian miniseries The Incredible Journey of Mary Bryant, for which he received nominations for Best Lead Actor in Television at the Australian Film Institute Awards in 2005 and Most Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series at the Logie Awards in 2006. O’Loughlin joined the cast of The Shield in 2007 as Detective Kevin Hiatt, the strike team’s newest member.

In 2005, he tried out for the role of James Bond in a film. As he stated to one interviewer: “I met with [director] Martin Campbell at his office on the Sony [Pictures] lot in Los Angeles, and he asked me to fly to London and test, which we did at Pinewood [Studios]. It was the largest screen test I’d ever conducted. It was extremely detailed. I had tuxedos and suits made, as well as hair cuts, for the occasion.

He left The Shield in 2007 after landing the lead role in the CBS series Moonlight as private investigator and vampire Mick St. John. [8] [15] The Hollywood writers strike halted production of Moonlight. The series was rumoured to be cancelled, but fan pressure prevailed, and the show was given four more episodes to try to regain its audience share. Despite being the highest-rated show in its Friday evening slot, CBS did not renew it for a second season. Following the cancellation of Moonlight, a fan-led charity campaign to win a second season renewal by holding blood drives was unsuccessful.

CBS signed a talent development deal with O’Loughlin in August 2008 to star in a TV series to be developed by writer Mark Gordon, but the project never materialised.  He was cast as the lead in Carol Barbee’s CBS hospital drama Three Rivers, which aired on Sunday evenings during the 2009-2010 season.

In April 2009, he appeared as an OCD-ridden serial killer, Vincent Rowlings, in the Season Four episode “The Big Wheel” of Criminal Minds. Three Rivers was dropped from CBS’s schedule in December 2009.  O’Loughlin co-starred in the 2010 romantic comedy film The Back-up Plan with Jennifer Lopez.

O’Loughlin was cast as Lieutenant Commander Steve McGarrett in the CBS remake of Hawaii Five-0, which premiered on September 20, 2010.
